Here’s the more positive side to the Christmas card story. On that Monday during lunchtime, the group of 6th graders who always come to English club came to the classroom to make cards. They tend to get too excited, and of course a few desks and chairs fell over, but I was happy to see them. And for the rest of the day I felt much better. Lily and I pulled out some Christmas-related vocabulary picture cards for them and wrote on the board ‘To my friend, Merry Christmas, from your friend_______ in Taiwan.’ Even at 6th grade, or perhaps I should say especially at 6th grade, they don’t seem to follow the draw-whatever-you-like type of instructions. I take it that they are carefully thinking things out, but it’s nice seeing them go at that piece of paper and not worry about how nice it will turn out…
